What is lymphoedema?
- Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid, usually in a limb extremity. This happens when there is insufficient drainage in lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes.
- Lymphoedema can occur following some cancer treatments especially where lymph nodes have been removed or damaged.
- Swelling is most common in the arms or legs, but may also occur in the trunk.
- Although it is not possible to repair the damaged lymphatic system, lymphoedema can be managed.
- The aim of treatment is to improve the drainage of fluid and reduce swelling, pain and discomfort.
