What about alcohol and heart disease?

No-one should take up drinking because they think it might have health benefits, including in relation to heart disease.

Latest research from the World Health Organization shows evidence suggesting benefits in drinking small or moderate amounts of alcohol on heart disease may be overestimated. The World Health Organization* states that 'there is no merit in promoting alcohol consumption as a preventive strategy.'

In Australia, the Heart Foundation also recommends against drinking red wine and other types of alcohol for the prevention or treatment of heart disease (see the Heart Foundation's Position Statement on Antioxidants in food, drinks and supplements for cardiovascular health, 2010.

People who are concerned about reducing their risk of heart disease can do this effectively by quitting smoking, following a healthy diet and being physically active.
