About Make Smoking History
The Make Smoking History campaign was established in 2000 as an initiative of The Cancer Council Western Australia and is proudly supported by the Council, the Department of Health Western Australia and Healthway.
The campaign aims to reinvigorate and contribute to efforts to drive down the prevalence of smoking among Western Australian adults.
Many of the anti tobacco advertisements that you may recall having seen, such as the successful Zita campaign featuring a Perth mother with lung cancer, have been the work of the Make Smoking History Campaign. View information about our past campaigns here.
A range of comprehensive strategies has been employed by the campaign in it's ongoing commitment to reduce tobacco caused harm in the state. Methods include hard hitting mass media advertising, community support based strategies (involving health professionals, workplace initiatives and regional activities) the production of public education materials, sponsorship and support, smoking cessation support, research and evaluation and public relations activities.
In the short period since its establishment Make Smoking History has achieved some outstanding successes, evaluating well with its target group and motivating smokers to quit or cut down their smoking. The Campaign has also received a number of state and international advertising industry awards, and continues to focus public, political and media attention on key smoking and health issues.
