September 2008: Study on the social costs of smoking
"The social costs of smoking in Western Australia in 2004/05 and the social benefits of public policy measures to reduce smoking prevalence"
A report commissioned by the Cancer Council Western Australia has revealed that the costs of smoking borne by Western Australia are a massive $2.4 billion per year.
International renownded health economists, Professors David Collins and Helen Lapsley, were commissioned by the Cancer Council to estimate the social costs of smoking in WA for the financial year 2004/05, and the benefits of reductions in the prevalence of smoking in WA to 5% or less over the next 10 or 15 years.
This latest study builds on the findings of reports for the years 1988, 1992 and 1998/99 providing an even more accurate estimate of the true costs of tobacco to our community
