Training for health professionals

Health professionals play a key role in helping people quit smoking and stay stopped.

Cancer Council Western Australia trains health professionals to improve their skills, knowledge and confidence in providing smoking cessation support to smokers who they may deal with in the course of their work, either one-on-one or in the form of group counselling.

Fresh Start Facilitator Training

Trains and accredits health professionals to run Fresh Start quit smoking courses in the workplace and community and to offer smoking cessation support to clients on a one-on-one basis.

This two day training program covers

  • Health information
  • Quit smoking theory
  • Fresh Start course content
  • Motivational interviewing techniques

Training is designed for professionals with an education or health-related background.  The Fresh Start course is a group orientated program therefore it is recommended that participants have previous experience in group teaching methods.

It's important that applicants share a commitment to the same health promotion goals and values of Cancer Council WA. Applicants to the Fresh Start Facilitator Training must have either never smoked or have quit smoking at least 6-12 months prior.

Time: 9.00am to 4.30pm each day (2 day course)
Cost: $250 per person (includes lunch both days)

Brief Intervention Training

A half day course designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide brief smoking cessation advice to patients.

Training is designed for professionals who come into frequent contact with individual smokers, such as:

  • GPs
  • Hospital doctors
  • Nurses
  • Dentists
  • Pharmacists
  • Mental health workers
  • Allied health professionals
  • Community health workers

NB: Additional fees and charges may apply for block training or if regional travel is required.

Brief Intervention Educator Training

A one day training course designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to provide Brief Intervention Training to staff of their service. This training is designed for health professionals or professional development officers with the responsibility of training other staff in brief intervention smoking cessation advice. Relevant experience in education, training and health are required. This training is suitable for organisations with a large workforce and client group.

NB: Additional fees and charges may apply for block training or if regional travel is required.
