The tip of a collection probe is inserted into the stool sample and dragged along it several times. The probe is then inserted into a collection tube. A sample is required from two separate bowel motions.
The immunochemical FOBT detects antibodies specific for haemoglobin. There are no diet or medication restrictions, therefore the test is better accepted and more often performed correctly.
The guaiac test detects the pseudoperoxidase activity of haem. The test requires three stool samples and when using a guaiac test, a person should not consume red meat, specific fruit and vegetables (for example, raw broccoli), vitamin C supplements, aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs a few days prior to taking their samples.
