Faecal Occult Blood Tests (FOBTs)

There are two types of Faecal Occult Blood Tests (FOBTs) available on the market; the guaiac and the immunochemical.

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program uses the immunochemical test titled Bayer Detect produced by Bayer (also known as Magstream HemSp). For this test, a biodegradable cellulose sheet is placed above the water in the toilet bowl and a stool sample is passed onto it.

The tip of a collection probe is inserted into the stool sample and dragged along it several times. The probe is then inserted into a collection tube. A sample is required from two separate bowel motions.

The immunochemical FOBT detects antibodies specific for haemoglobin. There are no diet or medication restrictions, therefore the test is better accepted and more often performed correctly.

The guaiac test detects the pseudoperoxidase activity of haem. The test requires three stool samples and when using a guaiac test, a person should not consume red meat, specific fruit and vegetables (for example, raw broccoli), vitamin C supplements, aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs a few days prior to taking their samples.
