PEPA - Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach

What is PEPA?

PEPA is an education program that provides health professionals with an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in the palliative approach by undertaking a supervised clinical attachment within selected speciality palliative care services in Perth.

How is it funded?

PEPA is a national program funded by the Australian Government Department of Health & Ageing under the National Palliative Care Program. The Cancer Council Western Australia's Professional Development Centre manages this program in WA.

How long is the PEPA Program being funded?

The project has been funded from 2007 to 2010. Placements run on a yearly basis with bi-annual calls for expressions of interest.

What is the duration of placement?

The supervised clinical attachments run for four days for general practitioners (GPs) and nurses, two days for allied health professionals and five days for Aboriginal health workers.

Aboriginal health workers will take part in a group placement (maximum five participants) while all other clinical attachments are organised on an individual basis.

Do I receive Professional development points?

Continuing professional development points have been allocated to this program by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

Are there any additional costs involved?

No, the project is fully funded. Rural participants are funded for travel and accommodation is organised by the PEPA coordinator. Employers and self-employed GPs can also apply to be compensated for costs associated with backfilling for participating staff and locum cover.

Is there any post placement support?

PEPA participants are entitled to attend one free workshop of their choice, presented by the Cancer Council Professional Development Centre, within a year of their placement. To apply, please contact the PEPA coordinator.
