Research Project Grants

Applications for funding in 2013 are now open

CLOSING DATE: 14 March 2012 by 5 pm (AEDST)
(this includes Supplementary Questions)

Applicants intending to apply for a Cancer Council Western Australia Research Project Grant must submit an application to the NHMRC. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Please Note: Cancer Council Western Australia will no longer be supporting 'multi-state' grants.  These will now be funded via a partnership between Cancer Council Australia and Cancer Australia.  See the Cancer Australia website for further details (www.canceraustralia.gov.au)

HOW TO APPLY

Visit the NHMRC website for information about applying and to download the latest version of the NHMRC application form.

In addition to the NHMRC application you will need to complete a set of Supplementary Questions, which are to be submitted by your institution's RAO as a PDF file directly to the Cancer Council Australia's National Cancer Research Grants Secretariat (CancerCouncilGrants@cancervic.org.au). The same application ID must be used on both the NHMRC application form and the Supplementary Questions document.

Supplementary Questions

The Supplementary Questions 2013 (pdf 272kb) document identifies which cancer funding body you are submitting your application to for funding consideration and provides information specific to Cancer Council applications.

The document has been expanded to include the Common Scientific Outline (CSO) classification system. The CSO is the result of collaborative effort between the NCI in the US, the NCRI in the UK, and their partners. It is a classification system organised around seven broad areas of scientific interest in cancer research, plus subgroups. The category descriptions in full can be found on the ICRP website.

Cancer Council Western Australia is committed to support early stage research projects and as such the Board has emphasised the importance of funding one year grants for projects which may then become more competitive for larger national funding pools.  In question 8 of the supplementary questions we strongly recommend that researchers emphasise how the Cancer Council Western Australia funded project will maximise the prospect of attracting additional resources to the research in the future.

Please also note that in instances where an Associate Investigator on a grant seeking NHMRC funds becomes a Chief Investigator in the Cancer Council Western Australia application, appropriate biographical materials as requested for CIs for the NHMRC application must be provided to CCWA.

Eligibility criteria and guidelines for applicants

Applicants need to adhere to 'Cancer Council WA Guide to Applicants and Conditions of Award' (pdf 197kb) as well as NHMRC eligibility criteria, if they are applying to both organisations for funding.

Applicants ineligible to apply for NHMRC Project Grant funding are still entitled to apply via the NHMRC process for Cancer Council grants.
