In 2008 the Cancer Council WA held it' s 14th Cancer Council Update, which takes place for 5 weeks leading up to Daffodil Day. The 2008 update was held in partnership with HBF. |

Assoc Prof David Whiteman
Associate Professor David Whiteman is a Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Population Studies and Human Genetics at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. He has published more than 114 research papers in the area of cancer prevention and epidemiology.
His Update presentation will discuss the main types of cancer that affect men, what men can do to reduce their chances of developing cancer and the importance of finding cancer early if they do get it.
Dr Liz Hovey
Dr Elizabeth Hovey is a senior staff specialist in medical oncology at Prince of Wales Hospital and a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW. She is the Chair of the national Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA) neuro-oncology group and is currently examining the role of a clinical care co-ordinator for neuro-oncology.
Her Update presentation will discuss adult brain cancer (glioma), what we know about early detection and treatment of this cancer and recent advances and ongoing research in this area.
Professor Miles Prince
Professor Miles Prince is Professor of Medicine at Melbourne University and Director of the Centre for Blood Cell Therapies at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials of new agents in myeloma and lymphoma, and other major research areas include cancer immunotherapy, cellular therapy, novel high-dose therapy approaches for transplantation, gene therapy and targeted therapies for myeloma, lymphoma, cutaneous lymphoma and leukaemia.
His update presentation will explore alternative treatments to chemotherapy for blood cancer patients.
Associate Professor Richard Fox
Dr Fox is presently an Emeritus Consultant at Royal Perth Hospital and an Associate Professor in the School of Physics at the UWA. He has been a member of the Radiological Council of WA, the body responsible for State radiation safety, since 1985 and is presently Chairman of its X-ray Compliance Testing Working Group.
His update will discuss the changes in levels of radiation exposure through the use of new medical imaging technology, and how this could potentially affect cancer patients.
Dr Michael Jefford
Dr Jefford is a consultant medical oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, clinical consultant with the Cancer Information and Support Service at The Cancer Council Victoria and is a senior lecturer/fellow of the University of Melbourne. His research interests focus on supportive care and patient-centred outcomes and on the management of people with gastrointestinal cancers.
His update will discuss the importance of good communication between professionals, patients and their families to help decision-making, highlighting current initiatives to improve doctor-patient communication skills.
