Cancer hub at SCGH celebrates three year milestone with new tech

Posted 21 Jun 2016.

Our cancer information hub and volunteer program at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is celebrating its third year of operation. Over that time, our volunteers have made over 20,000 supportive connections with visitors to the centre, with that service now being extended with a number of specialised iPads.

The electronic tablets provide patients and their families with easy and instant information on Cancer Council WA's extensive support services.

Yvette Hufschmidt, Cancer Council WA's Cancer Centre Volunteer Program Coordinator, said the tablets are an important tool to help volunteers assist cancer patients.

"The way the iPads have been set up is really intuitive, with users able to navigate our Compass app easily and find lots of useful information such as how to cope with cancer and what support services are available," she said.

Sue Thomas, a Cancer Council WA volunteer at the cancer hub, said the introduction of the tablets had already proven to be highly successful.

"Sharing info on our new tablets has been really well received by older patients," she said.

"They are something new and a talking point to start conversations which is a great step forward."

Ms Thomas has been a volunteer at the hub since its inception following the passing of her husband to cancer.

"When my husband died of cancer three years ago, I suddenly had lots of time on my hands," she said.

"So I thought, I've had three years of experience with chemo and the whole lot, so I know what the wives and spouse here are going through."

We also run a cancer information hub and volunteer support program for patients and visitors to Fiona Stanley Hospital's cancer centre - which this year celebrates its first year of operation.  A new cancer information hub has also been installed at St John of God Hospital, Midland.
