Do you want to be part of something big, make a difference and have a tonne of fun??
Relay For Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for our research, prevention and support services. It’s a chance for communities to recognise and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
Each Relay For Life event is organised by a local volunteer committee on behalf of Cancer Council. Teams of 10–15, which are headed up by a team captain, get together and fundraise year-round. Everyone then meets at the Relay to celebrate the amazing fundraising achievements of the past year.
There are many ways you can be involved in a Relay For Life and help us make a real difference in bringing the defeat of cancer closer, such as:
Joining your local Relay For Life Committee
We are looking for people from all walks of life to join local organising committees. Whether you have a lot or a little time to spare, we have a role that can work for you. You can apply your skills and interests to a range of different areas to help us pull together an incredible and memorable event; such as:
• Working on the logistics of the event
• Liaising with RFL times and communicating important relay related information
• Liaising with survivors and carers and communicating important relay related information
• Organising entertainment
• Organising catering
• Helping to recruit and coordinate volunteers
• Working on media and marketing
• Securing sponsorship
• Coordinating the opening and closing ceremonies
Joining a Relay For Life Team
Get a group of friends together and take part in this inspirational event raising funds in the fight against cancer. Teams of 10-15 aim to keep a baton going around the track for 24 hours. Relay participants are also encouraged to fundraise in the lead up to the event, with all money raised supporting our vital research, prevention and support services. You can register here.
Taking part in the survivor and carers walk
Have you heard the words ‘you have cancer’ or walked alongside someone with cancer? Then we invite you to take part in the survivor and carers walk. The first lap of Relay honours cancer survivors and carers who take to the track, proudly wearing coloured sashes. All participants gather around the track to applaud the courage and strength shown by those completing the lap. With motivation levels high, all participants walk the second lap together.
Volunteer on Relay Day
Volunteers are the key to bringing Relay For Life events together for the community. Without them, your local Relay simply could not happen. We are always on the look-out for more volunteers to help out on the day – anything from registering participants to handling merchandise. Everything helps!!
