CCWA: Hi Christina, tell us a little bit about yourself…
Christina: I started working with CCWA as a Support Coordinator in February 2015. I grew up in the UK and immigrated to Australia in 1983. I am now an Australian citizen and have lived in the Midland Hills area for over 25 years. I love the relaxed lifestyle here. I am married and have two grown up sons. I graduated as a registered nurse from ECU and have worked in most of the major hospitals in Perth. I love working in a not-for- profit organisation. My passions in life are my garden, which is ever evolving, trying out new recipes in my kitchen and our local bush for bush walking. Oh, and not forgetting my two dogs, Scruffy and Bella.
CCWA: What do you love most about your role?
Christina: Most definitely the contact I have with our clients. My role is very busy and diverse - no day is ever the same. It is with pride I am able to assist clients, their family and friends through their cancer experience. I have fantastic support from my volunteers for Admin, Driving and Complimentary therapy. They are the backbone of what happens here at Midland and I really enjoy working alongside them all.
CCWA: What kind of services can you help people living in Midland Hills with?
Christina: We have a lot of support that can be provided here at Midland. The transport to treatment is for our clients who need to get to radiation at FSH and SCGH and runs from our Midland office.
We also offer Complimentary therapies including Reiki and Massage here three days a week with our qualified therapists that volunteer their time to us. The Look Good Feel Better program is also run out of Midland for clients seeking support with skin care, makeup, wigs and more.
We have a Life Now program which includes meditation and exercise classes three terms a year and in addition to this, clients can access yoga in Glen Forrest. This is a free program for clients with a cancer diagnosis and their carers. There is also a support program we have just commenced here at Midland. It runs for twelve weeks on alternate Thursdays. The program has an information component covering nutrition, exercise mindfulness and much more.
And of course me as a Coordinator. I can support clients and their families and friends. If there is a service the client needs I try to find out if, where and how we can help them.
