Meet one of our amazing complementary therapy volunteers, Karen!

Posted 23 Mar 2017.

Karen Giamboi has been volunteering with us as a complementary therapist for over three years. An experienced massage therapist, Karen is oncology trained and specialises in massage therapy for palliative care.

Karen was inspired to take up volunteering after noticing the positive impact massage therapy had on her father in times of illness. When a volunteer role for complementary therapists opened up in the Peel region, Karen was quick to apply, excited to share the benefits of massage therapy with others in need.

“What I find most enjoyable are the people. You meet so many incredible people through volunteering, not just the amazing people suffering from cancer, but also the coordinators from the regions and the other volunteers. We’re all from a diverse range of backgrounds with training in different fields, but we come together to help others – we’re all very like-minded. CCWA is very good at supporting their staff and volunteers. I found that the inductions and training were very helpful and I’d love for more education programs to be available to volunteers to help us better understand what our clients might be feeling and what goes on in their day to day lives. Volunteering has helped me gain more as a person. I’m more aware, empathic and thankful for what I have - it really changes your perspective and shows you the strength and resilience of people.”
