10 years of Relay For Life

2018 marks 10 years since the Norwell family of Narrogin participated in their first Relay For Life event in 2008. Their son, John, was just 14 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer and the family signed up to participate in the Relay For Life Narrogin event to raise money to help other families like theirs and fund cancer research.

To date, their team of family and friends named ‘The Nutty Mob' have raised over $60,000 for Cancer Council WA by attending and fundraising for their local Relay For Life event. In 2016, The Shire of Narrogin recognised their efforts by giving their team an Australia Day award. This is their story.

The cause is very personal to us as it has impacted our family a huge amount over the years. We started The Nutty Mob team in 2008 after our son John was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was just 14 years old.

The tumour was removed the first time just after the 2008 Relay. It turned out to be two different tumours combined and unfortunately, one of them grew back and was again removed in 2011. We are currently seeing the specialists again as it has started to grow a third time.

Gayle also had a skin cancer removed from her face in 2013, but we still say we are the lucky ones as Gayle is now fine and we still have our son at home with us.

His treatment may not have finished yet but we will still fight all the way.

Relay's become a huge part of our lives. John had his 18th at the 2012 Narrogin Relay - he didn't want a party but all his mates met us there with almost a third of the town to help us celebrate with him.

We Relay so other families don't have to endure what we have over a lot of years. We also do it to thank all the previous fundraisers and researchers because, without their efforts, we may not be so lucky and still have our son at home with us.

The Nutty Mob have already raised over $13,000 ahead of the 2018 Relay For Life Wheatbelt.

Register your team today and help us continue to fund cancer research, education, and support for WA families, like the Norwells, when they need it most.
