2018 marks a significant year for all of us here at Cancer Council WA as we celebrate an important milestone - our 60th anniversary.
Since our establishment in the 1950s by a committed group of individuals who saw the need to coordinate cancer detection and treatment, stimulate cancer research and provide support to those affected by cancer, our contribution to reducing the burden of cancer in our community over the past six decades cannot be underestimated.
While many other cancer groups have since formed in WA, we have endured as Western Australia's leading independent cancer organisation.
We've come a long way since our humble beginnings in 1958 and we owe that to the generosity and unwavering support of the WA community.
60 years ago, the chance of surviving a cancer diagnosis was around 30 to 40 per cent. Today, survival rates for the most common cancers are more than 90 per cent, and the overall five-year survival rate for those diagnosed with cancer is 68 per cent.
Through our research, advocacy, education and support programs we continue to strive towards improving outcomes for all West Australians affected by cancer. From contributing over $47 million to local research to find new ways to detect, treat and defeat cancer to accommodating over 35,000 country cancer patients at our Lodges in Perth, every day we're striving towards our vision of a cancer-free future.
Although we're making great advancements, there's still much to be done in the areas of cancer prevention and research and in providing support to the thousands of West Australians affected by cancer each year.
Our latest estimates show that 1.9 million Australians will have a personal history of cancer by 2040; that's another 800,000 people living with or beyond cancer.
In the coming years, our services will be needed more than ever before. As a not-for-profit, non-government organisation, we are reliant on community donations to continue this life-saving work.
We hope you'll continue to support us for our next 60 years as we continue to make a massive difference in the lives of all West Australians.
Every minute, every hour, every day we're getting closer to a time when cancer is no longer something to fear, and that's something to be incredibly proud of - thank you!
