What is Life Now?

Posted 9 Jan 2018.

Our Life Now program offers free yoga, exercise and meditative classes for cancer patients and their carers at many locations across Perth and some regional areas.

Life Now was established in 2007 and is based on research which links regular exercise and stress-reduction programs to reduced treatment-related side effects and improved general well-being for people with cancer.

"Including regular exercise as part of a patient's cancer treatment helps to improve recovery before, during and after cancer treatment, providing a range of mental and physical benefits," said our Life Now Project Officer, Stephanie Lamb.

Life Now Exercise classes are open to people who have been diagnosed with cancer within the last two years and are delivered by experienced facilitators.

"The Life Now Exercise program aims to introduce exercise in a safe and supportive environment and empower people living with cancer to manage their own physical activity," Stephanie said.

Life Now Exercise participant, Helen Moffat, attributes her improved strength and mobility to the program.

"I am so amazed at what I have achieved in mobility and strength and how it took away the pain I had in my joints. I am determined to keep it going to improve my chances of not letting cancer come back into my body forever," she said.

Last year, 1,345 people registered to participate in 98 Life Now programs across the state.

Regular exercise as part of cancer treatment and recovery can help to:

Reduce fatigue Manage nausea
Manage pain Prevent weight gain
Improve sleeping patterns                     Maintain muscle mass

Improve quality of life Reduce bone mineral density loss
