National Reconciliation Week was held recently from 27 May - 3 June 2019. This year's theme ‘Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage' emphasises the importance of truth in reconciliation.
As part of our Reconciliation Action Plan, Cancer Council WA are proud to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and strongly support the notion that to improve relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, we must engage in a process of truth telling.
Cancer Council WA kicked off the week by providing Cultural Respect Education Sessions for our staff. These sessions were delivered by Noongar elder Dr Noel Nannup and Jenny Hunter from Sync7/Cultural Convergence.
The sessions aimed to improve staff awareness of Australia's shared history and Aboriginal culture and were thoroughly enjoyed and valued by staff who attended.
Cancer Council WA staff also attended Reconciliation WA's ‘Walk for Reconciliation' held on Friday 31 May (pictured above). The walk began outside RAC Arena and ended at Yagan Square, where there were a number of performances from Aboriginal artists and cultural activities provided.
The event was a great opportunity for our staff to show their support and commitment towards reconciliation and experience Aboriginal culture.
