Cancer in the spotlight for health professionals in the Kimberley

Posted 8 Jun 2021.

Regional Cancer Education Series: Broome.

Health professionals in the Kimberley region are being encouraged to attend a two-part Regional Cancer Education Series in Broome, covering a range of cancer-related topics.

Our Cancer Prevention and Research Director, Melissa Ledger, said the comprehensive education program will be delivered by leading clinicians and health service providers from across WA and the Kimberley.

"This event is part of our commitment to providing health professional cancer education in the regions and is the result of a collaboration with Cancer Council WA, the WA Clinical Oncology Group and WA Country Health Service. We are thrilled to be able to support regional health professionals in the Kimberley," Ms Ledger said.

Part one of the series will shine the light on the cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and support services available in the Kimberley. Part two will highlight the impact of COVID-19 on cancer care in WA and from a global perspective.

Guest speakers travelling to Broome include Dr Hooi Ee, Gastroenterologist, and Medical Oncologists, Dr Ari Ariyapperuma, and Dr Michelle McMullen. There will be opportunities for attendees to engage with the clinicians over the course of this education.

In 2017, there was 147 people in the Kimberley region living with cancer and that year, 50 people lost their lives to the disease1. The Kimberley and Pilbara regions are the only two regions in WA where the incidence of cancer is higher in females than males.

"We thoroughly encourage all Allied Health Professionals, nursing staff, GPs and Aboriginal Health Care workers to register," she said.

"There is also a limited number of small grants available to assist with accommodation and travel cost for those living outside the Broome area to attend this event."
