General Practice Cancer Education
The General Practice Education Project delivers a range of cancer education activities to general practice in Western Australia.
The project aims to ensure that general practitioners, practice nurses, and other allied health professionals working in primary care have access to education, services, and resources that facilitate improved knowledge across the cancer continuum.
GP Cancer Education meetings
Cancer Council WA is an accredited Activity Provider under the RACGP CPD Program, and ACRRM PDP. All meetings listed will be accredited with RACGP and ACRRM. The schedule below provides a list of upcoming GP education activities.

Genetic Services of WA provided a comprehensive overview of familial cancers including key discussion points for addressing familial cancer risk with your patients, determining eligibility for referral, genetic factors associated with familial cancer, and exciting advances in technologies and investigations.

Gut health management: Bowel disease, bowel cancer, and the microbiome - Aug 2020
Dr Hooi Ee, Dr Claire Gordan, and Catalina Lizama provided an updated on gut health management. The speakers addressed the significance of the gut microbiome, its role in disease pathogenesis, and therapeutic strategies including faecal microbiota transplant; identifying risk factors and improving behaviour to reduce bowel cancer risk, and appropriate follow up investigation; and the role of general practice in increasing participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
Psycho-Oncology collaborative: Grief & loss during COVID - Jul 2020
This webinar provided GPs with the current evidence around the impact of COVID-19 on dealing with grief and loss. This gave an opportunity to examine grief and loss from several perspectives, including their own, and provide insight into the incorporation of what we learn into future practice.

Professor Fraser Brims provide an updated on the current recommendations and guidelines for lung cancer screening and an insight into the findings from lung cancer screening trials. Dr Hooi Ee discussed the current National Bowel Cancer Screening Program and the different pathways for patients with symptomatic presentation compared to those undertaking screening.

Cancer Screening 'Plan Do Study Act'
Cancer Council WA in collaboration with WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) has developed three ‘Plan Do Study Act’ (PDSA) education activities on Bowel, Breast, and Cervical Cancer Screening. The activities support GPs and general practice in improving participation in the three National Cancer Screening Programs by identifying and engaging with eligible patients in their practice, increasing awareness of the cancer screening programs and encouraging informed participation.
The Plan, Do, Study, Act cancer screening activities are currently under review. The activities will be updated, in line with changes to the RACGP CPD program, and will be made available as soon as possible.
Online Learning: National Bowel Cancer Screening
Cancer Council WA has two online National Bowel Cancer Screening learning modules designed to increase your knowledge of bowel cancer and the National Bowel Cancer Screening program. CPD points are available upon completion of the module.
Online Learning: Occupational and environmental cancers
The occupational and environmental cancer GP e-learning module is a self-paced learning activity and will help increase GPs knowledge regarding workplace carcinogens and cancer in the Australian context.
Online Learning: National Cancer Screening Programs
This course is delivered online and is free to access. It provides information, resources, and tools to support GPs and primary health professionals to promote and manage clients through the three national cancer screening programs (bowel, breast and cervical cancer). It is delivered through a set of self-paced, eLearning modules.
This education is a CPD Accredited Activity under the RACGP CPD Program, and an accredited activity under the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine: Professional Development Program.
